Omentum Records Top Ten CDs repressed as LPs in 2016

1. Lee Harvey Oswald (Band) “Blastronaut” LP

So glad that twenty years after unleashing the greatest LP since “The Joy of Wine”, Touch And Go has finally decided to press up “Blastronaut” on the only substance that matters. I’m thinking “Rose Marie’s Baby” sounds like an outtake from their “A Taste of Prison” record, but only a schmuck could complain about getting their hands on a previously unreleased LHOB jammer.

2. John Coltrane “A Love Supreme: The Complete Masters” 3LP

How can one of the best records in the history of the world be improved on? By including two more LPs with it; dig the sextet sessions included on this version! Ashley Kahn wrote a book about this record if you need to know more than that.

3. Melvins “Basses Loaded” LP

Kudos to Ipecac for editing this immensely listenable single LP from a CD that occasionally sprawled off on some less-than-mesmerizing tangents. Don’t take this combo for granted—Get to listening now, and go see ‘em play live!!!

4. Petra Haden “Sings The Who Sell Out” LP

One of my favoritest singers covers my favoritest record from The Who all by herself with top notch results! I hope Ms. Haden gives any Claw Hammer full length a similar treatment sometime soon.

5. The Ramones “Live At The Roxy August 12, 1976” LP

The Ramones live in 1976? Count me in! This record is assembled from both of the live sets they played on 8/12/76, which were included in that 40th anniversary version of their 1st LP. As I’ve beefed in previous years, this record should be in print for the masses to purchase at any time, instead of being available for a few hours on one day.

6. Jeff McDonald “Jeff McDonald ” LP

Bang! Records rescues another CDR-only release from data rot, and what a blow-out it is! Mr. McDonald put this together in the mid-90s (I think) and it is a truly perfect record. This makes for a real nice companion to Redd Kross’ “Hot Issue” collection.

7. The Clean “Getaway” 2LP + CD

This CD-only release from 2001 is now here as a 2LP, and it includes a CD with “Slush Fund” and “Syd’s Pink Wiring System”. I’d have been very happy to plunk down for a 4LP version with the live sets pressed on vinyl (but I’ll be good with this for now).

8. Jimi Hendrix “Morning Symphony Ideas” 10”

Another Dagger title makes it (in this case only partially) onto a record. While I’d much rather be holding the entire 70 minutes of this as a black vinyl 2LP, it’s a start.

9. Wipers “Wipers Rarities” 2LP

I found one years ago as a bootleg LP, then Greg Sage remastered and expanded it into a Objects of Rarity CDR and now Bang! Records saves the day once again with a 2LP repress. If you have this and the “Out Takes” LP from Jackpot, you are covered (as long as you own their stellar full lengths).

10. The two way tie (for last) this year goes to Black Sabbath “Black Sabbath”, “Paranoid” & “Master of Reality” 2LPs and David Bowie “Bowie At The Beeb: The Best of the BBC Radio Sessions 68-72” 4LP box.

The second LP of each Black Sabbath reissue include alternate takes, instrumentals and (probably the only) songs that were cut from the original releases. I’m guessing no one will file a complaint about hearing live in the studio Bowie recordings from 1968 through 1972, right?

Best live sets of 2016 that I was lucky enough to catch:

The Dirtbombs, Expires, The Gotobeds, Joe Henry and Billy Bragg, Obnox, The S/cks, Soledad Brothers, The Sun Ra Arkestra, Terry and the Cops, Thalia Zedek Band

Omentum Records Top Ten CDs repressed as LPs in 2015

1. The Stooges “Have Some Fun: Live At Ungano’s” LP

Without a doubt, this is the best live recording of The Stooges I’ve ever heard. They were totally on fire in 1970. I wish Rhino would keep “Have Some Fun…” and Television’s “Live At The Old Waldorf” in print. Both records are way too significant to only be available for one day.

2. Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments “Straight To Video” LP

While Columbus, OH is, and always has been, home base to a plethora of bold and rockin’ combos, the Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments always brought an unwavering and unmatched vehemence to the stage and on their second LP (pressed up eighteen years after the CD arrived)!

3. Devin And Gary “Go Outside” LP

The Devin And Gary recording I like the most (so far). Feeding Tube does it up right and includes two extra tunes as well.

4. Teengenerate “Live At Shelter” LP

A completely blistering live set from 1995 put forth by four insaniacs that can hold their own with The Devil Dogs when it comes to creating unhinged rockism. Ugly Pop knocked it out of the ballpark in 2015 with this record, Discharge’s “Tornoto ’83” and a superb reissue of the Pack LP.

5.  Halo Of Flies “Music For Insect Minds” 2LP

Almost every song* in chronological order from one of the very finest bands in the history of Western culture. The majority of these 7”s, 12” and compilation tunes were long out-of- print when “Music For Insect Minds” arrived as a CD only collection. Here is your third chance to hear the best group that ever made a record for the Amphetamine Reptile and Twin Tone labels.

6. Jimi Hendrix Experience “Freedom: Atlanta Pop Festival” 2LP

So great to have one of the sets from the “Stages” box expanded into a double LP. Looking forward to the ’67, ’68 and ’69 performances receiving the same treatment sooner rather than later.

7. Chrome “Chromosome Damage” LP

Live tracks from their July 20 th 1981 performance in Bologna, Italy first started showing up when Cleopatra reconfigured the Chrome Box in the early nineties. Now, their complete set is finally available here, along with a studio outtake from 1976.

8. Silkworm “Chokes!” LP

Comedy Minus One Records continues their Silkworm reissue campaign with the combo’s final recordings. Nice to see Touch and Go caught the fever and finally got around to pressing up “It’ll Be Cool”.

9. Kim Salmon & The Surrealists “Ya Gotta Let Me Do My Thing” 2LP

Bang! unleashes the sprawling, Jim Dickinson-produced follow-up to “Sin Factory” including the “You’re Such A Freak” EP on Side 4. Kim Salmon’s liner notes summarize the history of the band, from the beginning of the combo through the recording of this 2LP.

10. Alan Vega Alex Chilton, Ben Vaughn “Cubist Blues” 2LP Recorded in 1994;

Hank Garfield squeaked this out on CD in 1996 as (I think) one of the last 2.13.61 releases. Now Munster joins up with Light In The Attic with a deluxe version of this beautifully tense and occasionally uneasy listen…and they put forth “Cubist Blues: Live In France 12/7/96” at the same time? Right on.

Best surprise of 2015: Government Issue “S/T” aka “GI 5”.

I had no idea the Dr. Strange label reissued my favorite GI LP with the four bonus tunes from the cassette and eventual CD versions included. If you’ve never checked out Government Issue, I can’t recommend a better place to start.

* Almost every song other than “Insecticide Stomp”, which can now be found on the “Dope, Guns and Fucking In The Streets Volume 1-11” 3LP, and “1988(Time For A War In)” from the “Mondostereo” LP on The Tinnitus Label / Away From The Pulsebeat (good luck tracking down one of those in the 21 st century).

Best live sets of 2015 that I was lucky enough to catch:

Cheater Slicks, The Darkness, Expires, The Gotobeds, ICP Orchestra, Mudhoney, NOTS, Obnox, Dave Rawlings Machine, The S/cks, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Television, Zeitgeist

Omentum Top 10

Omentum Records Top Ten CDs repressed as LPs in 2014

1. Jimi Hendrix “Hear My Music” 2xLP
Totally essential set of rehearsals from 1969. If you have any interest in Hendrix, then you need to hear this right now.
2. Jon Spencer Blues Explosion “She’s On It / Jack The Ripper”
JSBX’s tracks from the Japanese-only “Guitar Wolf vs The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion” CD now on a 12” with artwork by Cliff Mott. Get with it people!
3. Modey Lemon “S/T”
Mind Cure resurrects the Modey Lemon’s self-titled CD, originally released on A-F Records in 2002. So glad “Narrow Home” made it onto the LP.
4. The Clean “Anthology”
Merge Records reissues their 2xCD compilation of The Clean as a stunning 4xLP box.
5. Charley Patton, Blind Willie McTell and The Mississippi Sheiks’‎” Complete Recorded Works In Chronological Order” III Man did a great job pressing up the Document CDs for all three of these artists on LPs. Looking forward to more of this series!
6. AC/DC “Stiff Upper Lip”
After 14 years, “Stiff Upper Lip” is finally officially out on LP. Whenever Phil Rudd is in AC/DC, they can do no wrong.
7. X “X-Spurts The 1977 Recordings” LP
Stunning session recorded two years before “Aspirations”. If you like rock music, you need to get down with the X from down under.
8. Kim And Leanne “True West”
Looked like “True West” would be self-released only on CD until Bang! pressed up this jammer on LP. Way rawer than where Kim and Leanne were at when “Weird Love” was recorded. Looks like Hozac will do a domestic version in 2015.
9. various artists “Lost Souls Volume 1 Part 1: 1960’s Garage and Psychedelic Rock ‘n’ Roll from the Un-Natural State: Arkansas” Get Hip gets this CD from Psych Of The South out on LP. Right on!!!
10. Melvins “Hold It In” The good news: a super-great Melvins recording shows up two months after the CD as a LP (it took Ipecac a year to press up “Nude With Boots”, so this does count as an improvement on timing). The bad news: Two songs cut from this release to create a single LP? If pressing a 2xLP was too daunting, the LP + 7” option (a la “Sieg Howdy”) could have worked…instead, paying an extra $40 for a 10” art piece with the missing songs? No wonder their stuff is downloaded more often than purchased…

Best live sets of 2014 that I was lucky enough to catch:
The Clean, Death Of Samantha, Full Color Illustrations, The Gotobeds, Il Sogno Del Marinaio, Obnox, Old Head, Scrawl, Shockwave Riderz, Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments, Thalia Zedek Band, Zeitgeist
